About Me

I never thought I would need marriage counselling. My relationship with my wife Sarah was great. I was the managing director of a successful company. Then life got tough and we found ourselves in crisis. Going to couple therapy saved our marriage, and relationship therapy is part of our ongoing journey together.

What I learned from our therapy together, and from years of one-to-one psychotherapy, transformed my marriage and my life. The results impressed me so much that I decided to change career. I wanted to offer the insights and knowledge I had gained to other couples in distress.

I trained extensively in couple and relationship psychology, working with senior practitioners across several modalities to understand what makes long-term relationships work and why they sometimes don't. Over more than a decade, I qualified as a psychotherapist specialising in relationships and couples. I also trained and accredited as a registered psychosexual therapist, because the sexual relationship is often a key part of a satisfying marriage.

My clinical experience spans psychosexual health at an NHS sexual health service (56 Dean Street), personality disorders at Kent and Medway NHS Trust, and a wide range of relationship and mental health issues at Tavistock Relationships.

The journey didn't end there. Sarah and I went on to co-author a book together, 'You, Me and the Space Between Us', drawn from our own experience and what we've learned about relationships since. Sarah is now in the final year of her training as a Gestalt psychotherapist. That we both turned towards this work shapes how I work with every couple I see.

Registrations and Accreditations

I am registered and accredited with the UK Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP) and the College of Sexual and Relationship Therapists (COSRT). Both hold voluntary registers accredited by the Professional Standards Authority (PSA), an oversight body established by Government to improve standards in health and care for the benefit of the public. I am also registered with the UK Association of Humanistic Psychology Practitioners (UKAHPP) and the General Psychotherapy Council (GPsyC). My practice complies with the codes of conduct and ethics of each of these bodies.

Training

I trained at Tavistock Relationships, gaining an MSc in Psychosexual and Relationship Therapy and a postgraduate qualification in Psychoanalytic Studies in Couple Psychotherapy. I am also trained in Emotionally Focused Couple Therapy (EFCT) and Emotionally Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), the Gottman Method, and Terry Real's Relational Life Therapy. EFCT is the most researched evidence-based method in couple therapy: around 70 to 75% of couples move from distress to recovery, and approximately 90% show significant improvement. I remain an active member of the Tavistock Relationships alumni community and undertake regular continuing professional development with them.
